From the perspective of a police chief, - Assignment Example Presentation Police unfortunate behavior speaks to unsatisfactory activities that are regarded unlawful, taken by those in the police power regarding their proper duties of state while making a capture. Police wrongdoing is regularly a demonstration that isn't legitimate by the law and it for the most part includes separation in the obligations they should proceed as police. In an offer to deal with the wrongdoings by the police, there has been a quick developing pattern by the non military personnel/private offices to go past survey and take part in examinations legitimately and are known to have a more noteworthy contribution to choices that respect discipline. Police unfortunate behavior can be of different sorts and degree. Coming up next are the absolute most regular sorts of unfortunate activities that police have been known to frequently take part in. The wrongdoings comprise of, reconnaissance misuse, bogus admission, unfortunate behavior by an official while off the clock, b ogus capture, terrorizing, racial profiling, distorted proof, police severity, bogus detainment, and police defilement. There are more activities in which an official can be said to have acted in a demonstration of unfortunate behavior. One such case is the place a cop accepts that the end legitimizes the methods. By this I imply that a cop accepts that his motivation is honorable in light of the fact that it yield great outcomes. Another unfortunate behavior is the point at which a cop shows particular requirement. This is where a police demonstrates mercy to certain individuals since they are family, companions or individuals he has known previously. Another striking unfortunate behavior is the point at which an official of the law streaks his identification frequently as a method of requesting administrations, for instance when he need to get a rebate or access a spot (Martinelli, 2007). This is delegated maltreatment of intensity. We can likewise discuss concealing for bad behav ior through lying after swearing to tell the truth. An official while on the job isn't permitted to be affected by liquor or medications. Provided that this is true, the official can be blamed for unfortunate behavior and need to confront disciplinary activity. Each official is required to follow the set procedural approaches while they are on the job and no infringement of these strategies is worthy (Prenzler, 2004). It is accepted that no cop should betray the other official because of wrongdoing. The explanation concerning why this conviction is there is on the grounds that the cops are thought to have shared a code of quietness that makes them look the other way when they find that an individual official acted in a way that would propose he did an activity that adds up to unfortunate behavior. This alleged code has been invalidated by the police who state that it is non-existent and allude to it as a legend (Westmarland, 2005). Instances of police offense are regularly demonstra ted to be affected by the instruction and character of a cop. In the news, instances of police offense are brought to the lime light in a few events. Progression in innovation has empowered all crew vehicles in to be fitted with cameras that record the activities of an official and this is one explanation instances of police unfortunate behavior are being recognized prompting a diminishing in the instances of wrongdoing. Cops must have the information and aptitudes to effectively carry out their responsibilities. Top notch, section level, region and in-administration preparing programs are vital to ensuring that officials comprehend the departmentââ¬â¢s destinations as well as have the capacity to satisfy them. Itââ¬â¢s an inescapable result that thereââ¬â¢ll be some disarray, however Iââ¬â¢ll do without further diversion to get to the conversation. To swear off is to manage without, or surrender: ââ¬Å"He will do without the joy of her companyâ⬠; ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll renounce the custom of requiring a co-signer.â⬠The current participle is doing without (ââ¬Å"She is doing without the procedureâ⬠), the past-tense structure can be swore off (ââ¬Å"She did without the procedureâ⬠) or sworn off (ââ¬Å"She had done without the procedureâ⬠), and one who does without is a forgoer. Just the fundamental action word structure, notwithstanding, is normal. To forego, conversely, is to go previously, to go before. Forego is substantially less basic in utilization than swear off, and it by and large has a non-literal sense, frequently utilized in such proclamations as ââ¬Å"Her notoriety will forego herâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Her notoriety foregoes her,â⬠implying that others will have found out about the subject before they meet her. Be that as it may, in spite of the fact that the past-tense structure forewent is uncommon, the structure inescapable, and the current participle prior are more typical than the root word. An expression I utilized in the primary section, ââ¬Å"foregone conclusion,â⬠is applied every now and again to show that something is certainly comprehended to be valid; prior alludes to something that has recently been experienced, as an entry in a report: ââ¬Å"The previous explanation ought not be interpreted as an endorsement.â⬠To keep up the differentiation between the words swear off and forego in your brain, recall these nuts and bolts: Use do without or doing without in the feeling of ââ¬Å"doing withoutâ⬠; past-tense use is uncommon. What's more, however utilization of forego is impossible, inevitable and previous are regular terms for reference to something previously done. Or then again, most just, consider - fore in before to advise yourself that forego and its variations allude to arrangement and that do without looks like overlook, which is regularly the explanation something is left fixed. Stilwell starts the investigation of sound by showing that sound is totally different from light in numerous regards, in spite of the fact that there is a compulsion to isolate sound (in film, yet through life) into parts like discourse, impact and music. Stilwell contends this may not be shrewd, as these are on the whole meeting parts of the equivalent audial scene. Moreover, the discourse may regularly dominate understanding of the music and impacts, which can be taken on by masters or frequently disregarded inside and out. Stilwell additionally contends that music and impacts frequently have a more subconscious influence for the crow d than exchange, however are essential to the experience of the film and hence ought not be disregarded scholastically. Stilwell at that point explains into the focal point of the section: how subjectivity and sexual orientation are both piece of the translation of the sound scene. ... This thought is supported up by the idea of film, including the ââ¬Ëego-satisfying ID with the male legend and the libidinal spectacularisation of the female bodyââ¬â¢ (stilwell, 2005). Stilwell at that point proceeds to contend about the kinds of sound that can be knowledgeable about the true to life scene and how these have semi-formal associations with sexual orientation. In freudian examinations, the male voice is predominant and the female voice is agreeable. In this sense, the male voice can be compared to significant discourse (as communicated previously, the most observable piece of the soundscape) and the female voice can be likened to music or impacts. The connection can be moved further: solid is the overlooked female and visuals are the prevailing manly piece of the film (Stillwell 2005). This perspectives causes subjectivity to be seen as an unpredictable idea. The creator calls attention to that subjectivity has covering implications. Subjectivity changes as per i mplications and can be comprehended the related social coding. While female voice in films is related subjectivity the females are relied upon to be compliant in numerous societies including the western societies. The creator attempts to bring up that sound, particularly hearing, is related with unreasonable and enthusiastic angles. Sound is amplified by its subject, which is music. Music, feelings, and nonsensicalness are profoundly connected with ladylike inalienable in culture. The partnership of music, nonsensicalness, and feeling is woven into the psychoanalytic hypothesis (Stillwell 2005). A similar partnership has both positive and negative ramifications, explicitly for the female subjectivity. This compelling venture incorporates European Customs Union, the single cash and different arrangements which are proposed to join the economy of EU into a solitary unit. It was in 1957 when the Treaty of Rome was set up to give the conditions to the monetary network which incorporates progress of inside market, single horticultural arrangement and the structure of the foundations of European Community. The Treaty of Rome presented the idea of qualified greater part of casting a ballot. The Treaty of Rome set out four opportunities in Europe which incorporate opportunity of development of merchandise, to offer types of assistance, of capital and of individuals. It was in 1968 when European Customs Union was made to additionally set up the arrangements of the settlement. The formation of this settlement denoted the finish of the NTBs or non-duty boundaries. After the production of this arrangement, there was a conflict between free enterprise and interventionist just as between managed private enterprise and neo-progressivism. So as to additionally make stride in making a solitary market, the European people group made an approach of harmonization to accommodate the distinctions in national administrative practices and to make progressively normal standards. Be that as it may, this approach didn't completely succeed in light of unpredictability of the procedures including Non-Tariff Barriers, the choice principle of the lion's share and ultimately, it posted low political enthusiasm from the part states. (ââ¬Å"The Single Marketâ⬠). This normal market or harmonization was made by the Treaty of Rome so as to wipe out exchange hindrances and to guarantee monetary advancement among the part states. The accomplishment of the full usage of the arrangement didn't succeed to a great extent as a result of the determination of itemized authoritative harmonization (ââ¬Å"European Parliamentâ⬠). Since the part states needed to have everything casted a ballot collectively, harmonization turned out to be extremely hard to accomplish. The European Court of Justice and Mutual Recognition In request to build up the motivation behind making a bound together market in Europe, an essential advance was made by the European Court of Justice. The rule of common acknowledgment was made to ensure the free development of products and ventures. In any case, this rule doesn't require all individuals from the association to have a bound together enactment. The two merchandise and ventures can't be restricted from deal on the region of another part states aside from if there superseding of general intrigue, for example, wellbeing, purchaser security and insurance of nature (ââ¬Å"The Mutual Recognitionâ⬠). Beside this straigh tforward arrangement, it must be noticed that the standards of the part condition of source of the merchandise and ventures must win. This is viewed as a handy and persuasive device for a financial joining without giving up the nearby, local and national custom ( ââ¬Å"The Mutual Recognitionâ⬠). In spite of the fact that there is a transition to coordinate the market into a solitary market, the network despite everything needed to hold the assorted variety of the items and administrations offered by the part states. This significant advance advanced basic correspondence of guidelines than harmonization approach. It is said that part states can just call upon national limitations, conventions, customs and control facilitated commerce in territories thought about not commonly comparable (ââ¬Å"The Single Marketâ⬠). So organizational performance always determined by organizational behavior. Organizational behavior is basically determined from the behavior of the people working for the organization. So while keeping in view organizational behavior, organizational performance includes multiple activities, which help in creating the goals of the organization, and monitor the advancement towards the target. In order to achieve goals more efficiently and effectively this is used to make adjustments. The frustration of most of the owners and business executives usually is for Organization Performance. This is so even as their employees are hard working and are busy doing their respective tasks, the company is unable to achieve the scheduled results. Results are achieved not due to the diligent efforts made by the employees but more due to unexpected events and good fortune. In order for the any business to be successful, tasks must be defined and accomplished. It is important for an organization to develop strategies that should be designed around the skills that would enhance the performance of the organization. This could be accomplished by introducing Organizational Perfo rmance Management Systems. These are a number of major movements and methods that could increase the performance of an organization. Each one of these methods includes regular recurring activities that are used to establish the goals of the organization. These activities are also required to monitor the progress of the organization towards the goals. They are used to make adjustments to achieve the desired targets more effectively and efficiently. (https://www.managementperformanceadvice.com/organizationperformance.html). So the organizational performance is determined by the organizational behavior and organizational behavior is determined by the following factors Management styles Motivations Organizational structure Culture Work environment Training and development 1.1 Management styles Management styles are democratic, autocratic and consultative. Selecting the correct management style may lead to greater motivation and productivity from your staff. However, it is not as easy as just picking a style. Managers personalities and characteristics will influ+ence the type of style adopted. For example a timid manager will find an autocratic management style difficult to adopt. Democratic Management Style A democratic manager assigns authority to his/her staff, giving them responsibility to complete the task given to them (also known as empowerment). Staff will complete the tasks using their own work methods. However, the task must be completed on time. Employees are involved in decision making giving them a sense of belonging and motivating individuals. Because staffs feel a sense of belonging and are motivated the quality of decision making and work also improves. Although popular in business today, a democratic management style can slow decision making down because staffs need to be consulted. Also some employees may take advantage of the fact that their manager is democratic by not working to their full potential and allowing other group members to democratic manager delegates authority to his/her staff, giving them responsibility carry them. Autocratic Management Style In contrast to the above an autocratic manager dictates orders to their staff and makes decisions without any consultation. The leader likes to control the situation they are in. Decisions are quick because staffs are not consulted and work is usually completed on time. However this type of management style can decrease motivation and increase staff turnover because staff are not consulted and do not feel valued. So the performance of organization decreased. Consultative Management style A consultative management style can be viewed as a combination of the above two. The manager will ask views and opinions from their staff, allowing them to feel involved but will ultimately make the final decision. This type of management increase staff motivation and commitment which increase the performance of organization. 1.2 Motivation Motivation is the way to energize the employees to work for the organization to achieve the required goals of the organization. There are following motivational theories for the organizations developed over the time Maslows Hierarchy of Needs Maslow believed that all people are motivated by the same things. He identified 5 human needs he believed people wanted to satisfy. As one set of needs was satisfied by an individual, it would stop acting as a motivator, but the individual would then be motivated by the next set of needs. Names for the Needs Meaning Relevance to Business Self Actualisation The need to fulfill your potential. Employers allow staff to work at what they are good at, and to organize their work in the ways they wish to do it. Ego (esteem) The need to be valued. Rewards if targets are met merit pay rises, promotion; employers offer praise and acknowledge the good work of the employee. Social (acceptance) The need to belong to and work in a group. Team meetings, company magazines, staff social events; working in groups. Safety (security) The need to be protected. Safe machinery; protection in employment; contracts etc Basic (physiological) Food, warmth, sleep, clothes Heating, toilets, canteen; wages Dual-Factor Theory Frederick Herzberg Frederick Herzberg and his associates began their research into motivation during the 1950s, examining the models and assumptions of Maslow and others. The result of this work was the formulation of what Herzberg termed theÃâà Motivation-Hygiene Theory (M-H). The basic hypotheses of this theory are that: 1. There are two types of motivators, one type which results in satisfaction with the job, and the other which merely prevents dissatisfaction. The two types are quite separate and distinct from one another. Herzberg called the factors which result in job satisfactionÃâà motivatorsÃâà and those that simply prevented dissatisfactionÃâà hygienes 2. The factors that lead to job satisfaction (the motivators) are: achievement recognition work itself responsibility advancement 3. The factors which may prevent dissatisfaction (the hygienes) are: company policy and administration working conditions supervision interpersonal relations money status security Douglas McGregor X and Y theory McGregors Theory X managers believes that an employee dislikes work and will avoid it if possible. As a result Theory X workers must be controlled, directed and threatened with punishment if necessary to make them work. McGregors Theory Y manager believes that an employee finds work as natural as play or rest. As a result they are able and willing to organize, control and direct themselves, and to accept authority and responsibility. By adopting the influencing factor from these theories, required motivation level can be achieved which increase employees commitment and organizational performance. 1.3 Organizational structure Business Culture Importance For the business culture importance it took a long time for it to be renowned as an important factor in business success (or lack of success). Building a Positive Corporate Culture 1. Culture Carriers. These are key people, usually managers, who represent and spread the core values of the corporate culture. 2. Stability of the group. It is more difficult for a culture to emerge if people are changing all the time. 3. Stories. A group packages up its culture into stories which are frequently told and re-told, 4. Heroes. Individuals who typify to an extreme the values of the group. 5. Symbols. These may be staff mottoes, the corporate mission statement or anything that symbolizes the core values. 6. Rites. These are specific occasions, such as the annual office party, when the core values are publicly displayed. 7. Rituals. This means a standard pattern of behavior at a specific occasion, such as the office party if things are always done in a particular pattern. 8. Courses. Attending in-house courses is an important way of team-building and communicating the core values. 9. Cultural Networks. This means the informal contacts between emp loyees where they reinforce core values, especially by passing them from older to younger group members. Types of Corporate Culture 1. Adaptive Cultures. These have as a core value the ability to adapt to change, especially in response to changing external circumstances. 2. Inert Culture. This is a dead culture totally unable to change. 3. Networked Organizations. These are very sociable networks of small teams. They are highly creative. But loyalty is low. 4. Mercenary Organizations. These are ruthless business machines dedicated to work and to success. But sociability is very low. 5. Fragmented Organizations. These are really loose alliances of very independent workers, such as lawyers. Sociability and loyalty are both very low. 6. Communal Organizations. These have high loyalty and high sociability. They act like one big happy family. Recruiting new staff with similar values is important. Advantages of Strong Corporate Culture 1. Instructions are interpreted in a common way, so work is done to a similar standard and in a similar manner. 2. Loyalty is increased, and replacing workers is an expense to be avoided. 3. Motivation, and therefore productivity, is increased. 4. Management control is increased. Disadvantage of Corporate Culture 1. In a Multi-National Corporation there will nearly be conflicts between the local national culture and the imported corporate culture. 2. Businesses are not places with a homogenous culture. Most businesses are too large for people to identify across the whole organization. Instead, people identify with smaller sub-groups. So a business is, in fact, a mixture of sub-cultures some of which may even be deviant. There is also a strong likelihood of conflict between some of the different sub-cultures. 3. The relationship between a improved business performance and strong corporate culture is, as far as the data can tell, very weak. It may be then that corporate cultures are less about improved performance and more about making the managers feel they have achieved something; a cynic might argue that managers like to be surrounded by copies of themselves. 4. Business is rarely simple, clear and unambiguous enough to allow of one simple message of the kind envisaged by proponen ts of the corporate Facilitates communication between functions improve decision makinge culture idea. ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE Organizational structure is the formal system of task and reporting relationships that controls, coordinates, and motivates employees so that they cooperate to achieve an organizations goals. 2.0 TYPES OF STRUCTURE Functional Structure Functional structure groups people together because they hold similar positions in an organization, perform a similar set of tasks, or use the same kind of skills. This division of labor and specialization allows an organization to become more effective. Advantages of a Functional Structure Coordination Advantages Easy communication among Quick decisions -. Learning Makes it easier for people to learn from one anothers experiences. Motivation Advantages Facilitates performance evaluation for supervisor Facilitates performance evaluation for peers Creates teamwork that promotes high performance. Creates a career ladder Disadvantages of a Functional Structure Difficulty in serving needs of all products efficiently Coordination customer with varied needs are attracted to the organizations , they may find it hard to service these different needs by using a single set of functions. As companies grow, they often expand their operations nationally, and servicing the needs of different regional customers by using a single set of manufacturing, sales, or purchasing functions becomes very difficult. 3.0 Divisional Structures: Product, Market, and Geographic A divisional structure that overlay functional grouping allows an organization to coordinate intergroup relationships more effectively than does a functional structure. Product Structure Each product division contains the functions necessary to that service the specific goods or services it produces. Market Structure Group functions into divisions that can be responsive to the needs of particular types of customers. Geographic Structure Each geographic division has access to a full set of the functions it needs to provide its goods and services. Advantages of a Divisional Structure Coordination Advantages Quality products and customer service Facilitates communication between progress decision making functions, thereby increasing performance. Customized management and problem solving Facilitates teamwork Facilitates decision making As divisions develop a common identity and approach to solving problems, their cohesiveness in- creases, and the result is improved decision making. Motivation Advantages Clear connection between performance and reward Customized service regional managers and employees are close to their customers and may develop personal relationships with them. Identification with division employees close identification with their section can increase their commitment, loyalty, and job satisfaction. Disadvantages of a Divisional Structure High operating and managing costs Poor communication between divisions Conflicts among divisions 4.0 Matrix Structure A intricate form of differentiation that some organizations use to control their activities, results in the matrix structure, which simultaneously groups people in two ways- by the function of which they are a member and by the product team on which they are currently working. In practice, the employees who are members of the product teams in a matrix structure have two bosses-a functional boss and a product boss. Coordination Advantages Facilitates rapid product development Maximizes cooperation and communication between team members Facilitates innovation and creativity Facilitates face-to-face problem solving (through teams) Provides a work setting in which managers with different functional expertise can cooperate to solve non-programmed decision-making problems. Facilitates frequent changes of membership in product teams Disadvantages of a Matrix Structure Increase role conflict and role ambiguity High levels of work stress Limited opportunities for promotion Organizational Structure of Tarmac Ltd In Tarmac Ltd., the organizational structure is of divisional as it has been divided into different division like production division, engineering division etc. In this structure, all the employees are free to work and give their ideas for the future planning. In this way on one side the management gets different ideas but the ideas lack the professional approach as all the employees would not have professional qualification. In this way the implementation of those ideas can lead the organization away from the main goals of it. Enterprise: In case of enterprise the organizational structure is mixed- divisional, functional and geographical. The owner of enterprise makes the main decision and it is transferred to all the employees in different division and geographical locations. But on the other hands the employees are also given the authority to decide on the spot according to the situation. This type of organization structure helps the organization to grow and get more profit in the near future but on the other hands the control of the management loses on the employee. 5.0 RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND CULTURE: The task of a manager is to create an organizational structure and culture that: Encourages employees to work hard and to develop supportive work attitudes Allows people and groups to cooperate and work together effectively. Structure and culture affect: Behavior Motivation Performance Teamwork and cooperation Intergroup and Interdepartmental relationships The way a structure or culture is designed or evolves over time affects the way people and groups behave within the organization. Once an organization decides how it wants its members to behave, what attitudes it wants to encourage, and what it wants its members to accomplish, it can then design its structure and encourage the development of the cultural values and norm to obtain these desired attitudes, behaviors, and goals. In case of Tarmac Ltd; the divisional structure and sharing culture describe the organizational in best. Its culture describes Shared values Participative work Takin g care of employees Follow rules and regulations Career development This type of culture motivates the employees to work and enhance the performance of the organization. On the other hands in case of Enterprise mixed structure and open communication developed the culture of Customer satisfaction Growth Employee development Profit But the company does not care about the social factor as to help the society and take care of the environment. This causes to create a negative image in the mind of the customers and can decrease the market share of the Enterprise. On the other hands the employees are not involved in the decision making and are supposed to follow the rules set by top management without employees involvement which cause the de-motivation in the employees. Work environment Basically the culture determines the working environment of the organization. Positive and friendly working environment always increase the output of the employees. So because of the positive and friendly environment the performance of organization improves. Development and Training From the performance appraisal the deficiencies of the employees are assessed. To fill the skills gap of the employees for the job, suitable training is designed. The process of training assessment normally starts from the recruitment process, to fill the skill gap. The need for training assessment and development of training strategy is explained by the flow chart as below (https://www.e-bigfish.com/en/what-is-art.asp) Development and training Process After assessment of the training and development, training strategy is developed and individuals are selected for training. The development of training strategies starts from the review of business strategy which determines the skills requirement and help in the development of training strategy for the employees. After developing training strategy, top management select the traininr for the effective training. Training may be of two types On the job training Off the job training The type of training depend upon the availability of traininer and level of training required. It is axplianed by the flow chart below. (https://www.performanceweb.org/events/training/workforce-performance/sub7/) The delivery methods are selected, either practical training on job or class room training. Training contents are developed according to the new skills required by the trainee and dynamic nature of the job. If the development and training strategy is implemented, the performanc e of the organization increase because of the availability of right skills required for the jobs in the organizations. Dengue fever can range from a benign sickness to a dangerous hemorrhagic disease. Internal bleeding and circulatory collapse are a few symptoms that can happen if dengue goes untreated. Dengue is a huge problem, like yellow fever it is carried from place to place by mosquitos. Once inside the mosquito the disease is only waiting to rear itââ¬â¢s ugly head. Dengue only needs to wait to be transferred into the host body. Dengue needs to be eliminated. DNA based diseases can be just as fatal as pathogen (germ) based diseases. In leukemia DNA of the blood cells become corrupted causing them to reproduce quicker, and be unable to fulfill their purpose. The rapid reproduction fills the bone marrow with useless cells, stopping the healthy cells from functioning. This process is similar to à ²-thalassemia. This disease has been studied by the National Library of Medicine. They have discovered that due to a mutation in the gene hemoglobin, beta, the body is unable to produce hemoglobin. Man above woman, or woman above man? For the entirety of human civilization, this question of gender hierarchy has been divisive issue. Regardless, Milton does not hesitate to join the heat of the battle, and project his thoughts to the world. Since the publication of Paradise Lost, many of Miltonââ¬â¢s readers have detected in his illustration of the prelapsarian couple, particularly of Adam, a powerful patriarchal sentiment: ââ¬Å"he for God only, and she for God in himâ⬠(Milton, IV.299). In essence, this idea declares that Adam and Eve possess unequal roles ââ¬â Adam is better than Eve, as men are better than women, in accordance to the deeply conventional reading of the relations between the sexes. Consequently, Adam immediately loves her, since he feels a strong manifestation of himself in her. However, a problem arises when Adamââ¬â¢s love for Eve transforms into passion, two distinct emotions that are identified by the angel Rafael: ââ¬Å"In loving thou dost well; in passion not, / Wherein true love consist not. Love refines / The thoughts, and heart enlarges hath his seat in reasonâ⬠(VIII.588-590). Love and passion are different because the former ââ¬Å"refinesâ⬠reason while the latter corrupts it ââ¬â passion can be dangerous to reason. However, in his discussion with Rafael, Adamââ¬â¢s initial depiction of Eve hints that he feels both love and passion for Eve. In describing her, Adam says: Her loveliness, so absolute she seems And in herself complete, so well to know Her own, that what she wills to do or say, Seems wisest, virtuousest, discreetest, best: All higher Knowledge in her presence falls Degraded; Wisdom in discourse with her Loses â⬠¦ (VIII.447-452) He confesses that his passion for Eve overpowers his own reason. Caldwell P.N.S. 1.Decubitis Ulcers are also known as bed sores.(Marsh 1) They are mostly seen inGeriatrics patients. They occur in people who are put on bed rest, or long periods of wheelchair use. A traumatic decubitis ulcer is precipitated by continuous pressure on the skin and deep tissue with ischemic necrosis (Plewig 369). These particular ulcers are mainly found on bony parts of the body. They develop when the cells die because there is a tremendous amount of pressure put on the skin and it is trapped between a mattress or chair and tiny blood vessels collapse. The parts of the body that are affected by these ulcers are the back of the head, ear, shoulders, elbows, hips, sacrum, knees, ankles, and heels. Decubitis ulcers can be classified into three grades. (1) Area is more reddened, skin is dry. (2) Area is more reddened, epidermal layer of the skin is broken, and blisters form. (3) Deeper layers of the skin are affected, blisters are broken open, and bone may be visible. (Hegner, Caldwell 42 1)2. Before treating decubitis ulcers, viewing of the nurse or caregivers feelings about the care is important. Heshe should determine whether or not they agree with the patients wishes and is capable of completing that care. When making these decisions, consider the stage of the ulcer and the treatment needed, the benefits and the burdens of the treatment, and the anticipated treatment outcome (Darkovich 47). After these views are looked at, there are many treatments available. If the area is reddened, all that is needed is a gentle massage. If the skin is open, bacteriostatic agents, antiseptic sprays, and antibiotic ointments are used to reduce or prevent bacteria. The surgical process called grafting is practiced to treat these ulcers. This is when a patch of skin is removed from one part of the body, and is placed onto the infected area. Sheepskin pads, alternating air pressure mattresses, heel protectors, and egg crate mattresses are also used. (Hegner, Caldwell 427)3. The fir st lab test that I found is a urinalysis. This is a test of the urine to detect alcohol, drugs, sugar, and other abnormal substences. This tells us if there is any bacteria in the body, and if it is located in the decubitis ulcer, so we can know if it is infected or not. The second lab test that is done on these ulcers is CD, this determines the antigens on the white blood cells. This shows whether or not the patients immune system can fight off the bacteria in the ulcer. The last lab test, is a culture. This is done by scraping the side of the infected area and putting it under a microscope to view the living, harmful organisms in the ulcer. All of the lab tests that are done determine the seriousness of the ulcer and what the best medication would be to help cure it. 4. Elase is a drug that helps relieve signs and symptoms of infection. This inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria at the level of the 50s bacterial ribosome. It is used for skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, and CNS infections. The pregnancy category is unknown. The side effects are depression, confusion, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, and fever. It is absorbed orally and distributed widely. It crosses placenta and enters breast milk. Drug interactions are oralhypoglycemia agents, warfarin, phenytoin, rifampin, vitamin B, folic acid, and acetominophen. It is available in 12.5 mg/kg q 6 hours. The assessments are to check for infection in sputum, urine, stool, and WBC. Check vital signs. Planning-contradicted in hypersensitivity. Implementation- medication should be given around the clock. Administer over 30-60 minutes. Evaluation- the length of time for the medication to work depends on the organisms in the ulcer and the size of it. .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 , .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .postImageUrl , .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 , .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623:hover , .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623:visited , .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623:active { border:0!important; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623:active , .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623 .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5b25a1de5a972ed6083a996cb6565623:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Thesis on The New View of Reconstruction thesis Essay5. The normal readings of vital signs should be blood pressure 100-150/60-90, pulse 60-90, respiration 12-20, and temperature 98.6 farenheight. When the patient is in severe pain the vital signs will increase. The vital signs will also increase if bacteria is present in the ulcer. In geriatric patients, the vital signs should be monitored often because they are in more danger than average aged adults. A fever is considered 101 farenheight, and anything higher or lower than the above recordings is abnormal. The vital signs are not usually affected by the lab tests that are done. 6,7. I am assigned to a make-believe patient. Her name is Mrs. Roberts and she is 67 yearsold. She has a stage 3 decubitis ulcer and I have to give her complete care. The first thing I would do when I walk into the room is check her name band and chart. The chart says tochange her dressing on the decubitis ulcer and give her a complete bed bath. First I would take her vital signs and record them. Then I would start changing the dressing on the ulcer. While Im changing the dressing I would look for and record everything that I see on the wound. (Lynch 909) Then, I would give her a bath, making sure her bed sheets are not wet or wrinkled because that is harmful to the skin. I would also look on the chart to see how long ago it was since her position was changed. If it was two hours ago, I would then change her position, but not place her on the ulcer. Next, I would check her intake and output, an encourage her to drink more fluids. If she hasnt drank atleast 300 cc. I would also check w hat her diet is and try to get her to eat more nutritious foods and a lot of foods with iron included. After all of that was completed, I would take her vital signs again to make sure that there was no dramtic changes, and record them on the chart. 8. The evaluation of the care depends on whether or not the ulcer has gotten better or worse. Five ways to measure your success is to check if the ulcer has gotten bigger or smaller. If it is smaller, you benefited the patient. Another way is to check if the ulcer is infected or not. Also, if the patient is in less pain, and the ulcer is starting to heal, you have succeeded. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar 3. 3 Welding and welded connections Welding is the process of joining two pieces of metal by creating a strong metallurgical bond between them by heating or pressure or both. It is distinguished from other forms of mechanical connections, such as riveting or bolting, which are formed by friction or mechanical interlocking. It is one of the oldest and reliable methods of joining. Welding offers many advantages over bolting and riveting. Welding enables direct transfer of stress between members eliminating gusset and splice plates necessary for bolted structures. Hence, the weight of the joint is minimum. In the case of tension members, the absence of holes improves the efficiency of the section. It involves less fabrication cost compared to other methods due to handling of fewer parts and elimination of operations like drilling, punching etc. and consequently less labour leading to economy. Welding offers air tight and water tight joining and hence is ideal for oil storage tanks, ships etc. Welded structures also have a neat appearance and enable the connection of complicated shapes. Welded structures are more rigid compared to structures with riveted and bolted connections. A truly continuous structure is formed by the process of fusing the members together. Generally welded joints are as strong or stronger than the base metal, thereby placing no restriction on the joints. Stress concentration effect is also considerably less in a welded connection. Some of the disadvantages of welding are that it requires skilled manpower for welding as well as inspection. Also, non-destructive evaluation may have to be carried out to detect defects in welds. Welding in the field may be difficult due to the location or environment. Welded joints are highly prone to cracking under fatigue loading. Large residual stresses and distortion are developed in welded connections. 3. 3. 1 Fundamentals of welding A welded joint is obtained when two clean surfaces are brought into contact with each other and either pressure or heat, or both are applied to obtain a bond. The tendency of atoms to bond is the fundamental basis of welding. The inter-diffusion Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar between the materials that are joined is the underlying principle in all welding processes. The diffusion may take place in the liquid, solid or mixed state. In welding the metallic materials are joined by the formation of metallic bonds and a perfect connection is formed. In practice however, it is very difficult to achieve a perfect joint; for, real surfaces are never smooth. When welding, contact is established only at a few points in the surface, joins irregular surfaces where atomic bonding occurs. Therefore the strength attained will be only a fraction of the full strength. Also, the irregular surface may not be very clean, being contaminated with adsorbed moisture, oxide film, grease layer etc. In the welding of such surfaces, the contaminants have to be removed for the bonding of the surface atoms to take place. This can be accomplished by applying either heat or pressure. In practical welding, both heat and pressure are applied to get a good joint. As pointed out earlier, any welding process needs some form of energy, often heat, to connect the two materials. The relative amount of heat and pressure required to join two materials may vary considerably between two extreme cases in which either heat or pressure alone is applied. When heat alone is applied to make the joint, pressure is used merely to keep the joining members together. Examples of such a process are Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) etc. On the other hand pressure alone is used to make the bonding by plastic deformation, examples being cold welding, roll welding, ultrasonic welding etc. There are other welding methods where both pressure and heat are employed, such as resistance welding, friction welding etc. A flame, an arc or resistance to an electric current, produces the required heat. Electric arc is by far the most popular source of heat used in commercial welding practice. 3. 3. 2 Welding process In general, gas and arc welding are employed; but, almost all structural welding is arc welding. Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar In gas welding a mixture of oxygen and some suitable gas is burned at the tip of a torch held in the welderââ¬â¢s hand or by an automatic machine. Acetylene is the gas used in structural welding and the process is called oxyacetylene welding. The flame produced can be used both for cutting and welding of metals. Gas welding is a simple and inexpensive process. But, the process is slow compared to other means of welding. It is generally used for repair and maintenance work. The most common welding processes, especially for structural steel, use electric energy as the heat source produced by the electric arc. IS:816 in this process, the base metal and the welding rod are heated to the fusion temperature by an electric arc. The arc is a continuous spark formed when a large current at a low voltage is discharged between the electrode and the base metal through a thermally ionised gaseous column, called plasma. The resistance of the air or gas between the electrode and the objects being welded changes the electric energy into heat. A temperature of 33000 C to 55000 C is produced in the arc. The welding rod is connected to one terminal of the current source and the object to be welded to the other. In arc welding, fusion takes place by the flow of material from the welding rod across the arc without pressure being applied. The Shielded Metal Arc Welding process is explained in the following paragraph. In Shielded Metal Arc Welding or SMAW (Fig. 3. 12), heating is done by means of electric arc between a coated electrode and the material being joined. In case bare wire electrode (without coating) is employed, the molten metal gets exposed to atmosphere and combines chemically with oxygen and nitrogen forming defective welds. The electrode coating on the welding rod forms a gaseous shield that helps to exclude oxygen and stabilise the arc. The coated electrode also deposits a slag in the molten metal, which because of its lesser density compared to the base metal, floats on the surface of the molten metal pool, shields it from atmosphere, and slows cooling. After cooling, the slag can be easily removed by hammering and wire brushing. Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar The coating on the electrode thus: shields the arc from atmosphere; coats the molten metal pool against oxidation; stabilises the arc; shapes the molten metal by surface tension and provides alloying element to weld metal. Fig. 3. 12 Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process Fig. 3. 12 Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process The type of welding electrode used would decide the weld properties such as strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. The type to be used for a particular job depends upon the type of metal being welded, the amount of material to be added and the position of the work. The two general classes of electrodes are lightly coated and heavily coated. The heavily coated electrodes are normally used in structural welding. The resulting welds are stronger, more corrosion resistant and more ductile compared to welds produced by lightly coated electrodes. Usually the SMAW process is either automatic or semi-automatic. The term weldability is defined as the ability to obtain economic welds, which are good, crack-free and would meet all the requirements. Of great importance are the chemistry and the structure of the base metal and the weld metal. The effects of heating and cooling associated with fusion welding are experienced by the weld metal and the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) of the base metal. The cracks in HAZ are mainly caused by high carbon content, hydrogen enbrittlement and rate of cooling. For most steels, weld cracks become a problem as the thickness of the plates increases. Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar 3. 3. 3 Types of joints and welds By means of welding, it is possible to make continuous, load bearing joints between the members of a structure. A variety of joints is used in structural steel work and they can be classified into four basic configurations namely, Lap joint, Tee joint, Butt joint and Corner joint. For lap joints, the ends of two members are overlapped and for butt joints, the two members are placed end to end. The T- joints form a Tee and in Corner joints, the ends are joined like the letter L. Most common joints are made up of fillet weld or the butt (also calling groove) weld. Plug and slot welds are not generally used in structural steel work. Fig. . 14 Fillet welds are suitable for lap joints and Tee joints and groove welds for butt and corner joints. Butt welds can be of complete penetration or incomplete penetration depending upon whether the penetration is complete through the thickness or partial. Generally a description of welded joints requires an indication of the type of both the joint an d the weld. Though fillet welds are weaker than butt welds, about 80% of the connections are made with fillet welds. The reason for the wider use of fillet welds is that in the case of fillet welds, when members are lapped over each other, large tolerances are allowed in erection. For butt welds, the members to be connected have to fit perfectly when they are lined up for welding. Further butt welding requires the shaping of the surfaces to be joined as shown in Fig. 3. 15. To ensure full penetration and a sound weld, a backup plate is temporarily provided as shown in Fig. 3. 15 Butt welds: Full penetration butt welds are formed when the parts are connected together within the thickness of the parent metal. For thin parts, it is possible to achieve full penetration of the weld. For thicker parts, edge preparation may have to be done to achieve the welding. There are nine different types of butt joints: square, single V, Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar double V, single U, double U, single J, double J, single bevel and double bevel. They are shown in Fig. 3. 13 In order to qualify for a full penetration weld; there are certain conditions to be satisfied while making the welds. Welds are also classified according to their position into flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead. Flat welds are the most economical to make while overhead welds are the most difficult and expensive. True Romance EssayDesign of Steel Structures Prof. S. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar improved. For intermediate weld positions, the value of strength and ductility show intermediate values. Fig. 3. 20 Butt welding of members with (a) (b) unequal thickness (c) unequal width In many cases, it is possible to use the simplified approach of average stresses in the weld throat (Fig. 3. 22). In order to apply this method, it is important to establish equilibrium with the applied load. Studies conducted on fillet welds have shown that the fillet weld shape is very important for end fillet welds. For equal leg lengths, making the direction of applied tension nearly parallel to the throat leads to a large reduction in strength. The optimum weld shape recommended is to provide shear leg ? 3 times the tension leg. A small variation in the side fillet connections has negligible effect on strength. In general, fillet welds are stronger in compression than in tension. Fig. 3. 21 Fillet (a) side welds and (b) end welds Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar Fig. 3. 2 Average stress in the weld throat A simple approach to design is to assume uniform fillet weld strength in all directions and to specify a certain throat stress value. The average throat thickness is obtained by dividing the applied loads summed up in vectorial form per unit length by the throat size. This method is limited in usage to cases of pure shear, tension or compression (Fig. 3. 23). It cannot be used in cases where the load vector direction varies around weld group. For the simple method, the stress is taken as the vector sum of the force components acting in the weld divided by the throat area. Fig. . 23 (a) connections with simple weld design, (b) connections with Direction- dependent weld design Stresses Due to Individual forces When subjected to either compressive or tensile or shear force alone, the stress in the weld is given by: Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. The size of a fillet weld should not be less than 3 mm or more than the thickness of the thinner part joined. Minimum size requirement of fillet welds is given below in Table 3. 4 (Cl. 10. 5. 2. 3). Effective throat thickness should not be less than 3 mm and should not exceed 0. 7 t and 1. 0 t under special circumstances, whereââ¬â¢tââ¬â¢ is the thickness of thinner part. Values of K for different angles between tension fusion faces are given in Table 3. 5 (Cl. 10. 5. 3. 2). Fillet welds are normally used for connecting parts whose fusion faces form angles between 60à ° and 120à °. The actual length is taken as the length having the effective length plus twice the weld size. Minimum effective length should not be less than four times the weld size. The length of intermediate welds should not be less than 4 times the weld size with a minimum of 40 mm. The clear spacin g between the effective lengths of the intermittent welds should be less than or equal to 12 times the thickness of the thinner member in compression and 16 times in tension; in no case the length should exceed 20 cm. Chain intermittent welding is better than staggered intermittent welding. Intermittent fillet welds are not used in main members exposed to weather. For lap joints, the overlap should not be less than five times the thickness of the thinner part. For fillet welds to be used in slots and holes, the dimension of the slot or hole should comply with the following limits: a) The width or diameter should not be less than three times the thickness or 25 mm whichever is greater b) Corners at the enclosed ends or slots should be rounded with a radius not less than 1. times the thickness or 12 mm whichever is greater, and Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. Fig. 3. 27 End returns for side welds The effective area of a plug weld is assumed as the nominal area of the whole in the plane of the faying surface. Plug welds are not designed to carry stresses. If two or more of the general types of weld (butt, fillet, plug or slots) are combined in a single joint, the effective capacity of each has to be calculated separately with reference to the axis of the group to determine the capacity of the welds. The high stress concentration at ends of welds is minimised by providing welds around the ends as shown in Fig. 3. 27. These are called end returns. Most designers neglect end returns in the effective length calculation of the weld. End returns are invariably provided for welded joints that are subject to eccentricity, impact or stress reversals. The end returns are provided for a distance not less than twice the size of the weld. Design of plug and slot welds: In certain instances, the lengths available for the normal longitudinal fillet welds may not be sufficient to resist the loads. In such a situation, the required strength may be built up by welding along the back of the channel at the edge of the plate if sufficient space is available. This is shown in Fig. . 28 (a). Another way of developing the required strength is by providing slot or plug welds. Slot and plug welds are generally used along with fillet welds in lap joints. On certain occasions, plug welds are used to fill the holes that are temporarily made for erection bolts for beam and Indian Institute of Technology Madras Design of Steel Structures Prof. S. R. Satish Kumar and Prof. A. R. Santha Kumar column connections. However, their strength ma y not be considered in the overall strength of the joint. The limitations given in specifications for the maximum sizes of plug and slot welds are necessary to avoid large shrinkage, which might be caused around these welds when they exceed the specified sizes. The strength of a plug or slot weld is calculated by considering the allowable stress and its nominal area in the shearing plane. This area is usually referred to as the faying surface and is equal to the area of contact at the base of the slot or plug. The length of the slot weld can be obtained from the following relationship: Load ( Width ) allowable stress L= (3. 15) Fig. 3. 28 Slot and plug welds Indian Institute of Technology Madras Tristan Myrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15384002347903931067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8740766368199773604.post-16137570715446637202020-04-23T07:15:00.001-07:002020-04-23T07:15:01.854-07:00The Linguistic Relativity Argument an Example of the Topic Education and science byThe Linguistic Relativity Argument The linguistic relativity argument states that "language-induced differences in thought generate different realities" (Collin, 2002, p.81). Finn Collin (2002) identified two premises for the linguistic relativity argument: (1) "Language shapes thought; more specifically, that differences in language translate into differences in thought" and (2) "Through our thoughts, language reality determines the way reality is divided up" (Collin, 2002, p.81-82). In line with this, Collin quotes Edward Sapir who states, "The fact of the matter is that the 'real world' is to a large extent unconsciously built up on the language habits of the group" (2002, p.84). The logical implication of such a view is that there is no single, determinate reality. There are realities. In a sense, these different realities are made possible by differences in language and thought. Need essay sample on "The Linguistic Relativity Argument" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed The linguistic relativity argument then, is accounting for social facts (social reality) as a construction or generation by virtue of the different ways by which a linguistic community thinks, describes, encounters or appropriates for itself, reality. Since linguistic communities vary in the ways by which they think, describe, encounter or appropriate for themselves what reality is, the implication is that different languages produce different realities, hence, dubbed the linguistic relativity argument. Following this train of thought, the basis then, for saying that social facts are constructed is the very notion of linguistic relativity. Collin argues that the linguistic relativity argument cannot be used to establish social constructivism. Again, the argument states that "language-induced differences in thought generate different realities" (Collin, 2002, p.81). The argument also tries to account for social facts (social reality) in such a way that (and it can be noticed that) through and by language, we can make classifications and descriptions about things in reality by recognizing certain properties in these things. Mutual recognition of these properties by the members of the linguistic community makes possible for the members to ascribe 'terms' corresponding to these things, which consequently makes them 'determinate'. Collin argues that the fact that we employ classifying terms presupposes the existence of these things, and ultimately, reality. The argument therefore, does not establish that reality is a construction or generation. The linguistic relativity argument is not a proper and an adequate account of so cial facts. I agree with Collin's contention that the fact that we employ classifying terms presupposes the existence of a reality. In order to strengthen Collin's point, I will try to explain it further by using the phenomenon of "naming" as an example. Collin's argument is that classifying terms presuppose that there is a reality and thus, linguistic relativity cannot adequately account for the social construction thesis. On the phenomenon of naming, Wittgenstein states, "Naming is something like attaching a label to a thing. One can say that this is preparatory to the use of the word" (2001, p.11). In the Philosophical Investigations, Wittgenstein claims that the process of naming is like attaching a label to a thing or an object. Names are labels, so to speak and it is this characterization of names as labels that explain why there is only an arbitrary relation between a name and its referent. Although this particular view may be regarded as sympathetic to the idea that reality is a construction, Collin's argument still remains intact. The phenomenon of naming does not, in any way prove much nor does it logically lead us to the idea that reality is a construction or generation because of the fact that the phenomenon of naming itself presupposes the existence of a physical reality that we attempt to give names or labels or to categorize. This means that knowing how best to deal with word problems will help you significantly when taking the test. Though there are many different types of ACT word problems, most of them are not nearly as difficult or cumbersome as they may appear. This post will be your complete guide to ACT word problems:how to translate your word problems into equations and diagrams, the different types of word problems youââ¬â¢ll see on the test, and how best to go about solving your word problems for test day. What Are Word Problems? A word problem is any problem that is based mostly or entirely on written description and does not provide you with an equation, diagram, or graph. You must use your reading skills to translate the words of the question into a workable math problem and then solve for your information. Word problems will show up on the test for a variety of reasons. Most of the time, these types of questions act to test your reading and visualization skills, as well act as a medium to deliver questions that would otherwise be untestable. For instance, if you must determine the number of sides of an unknown polygon based on given information, a diagram would certainly give the game away! Translating Word Problems Into Equations or Drawings In order to translate your word problems into actionable math equations that you can solve, youââ¬â¢ll need to know and utilize some key math terms. Whenever you see these words, you can translate them into the proper action. For instance, the word ââ¬Å"productâ⬠means ââ¬Å"the value of two or more values that have been multiplied together,â⬠so if you need to find ââ¬Å"the product of a and b,â⬠youââ¬â¢ll need to set up your equation with $a * b$. Key Terms Mathematical Action Sum, increased by, added to, total of + Difference, decreased by, subtracted from - Product, times * or x Divided by / or à · Equals, is, are, equivalent, same = Is less than Is greater than Is less than or equal to âⰠ¤ Is greater than or equal to âⰠ¥ Let's take a look at this in action with an example problem: We have two different cable companies that each have different rates for installation and different monthly fees. We are asked to find out how many months it will take for the cost for each company to be the "same," which means we must set the two rates equal. Uptown Cable charges120 dollars for installation plus 25 dollars a month. We do not know how many months we're working with, so we will have: $120 + 25x$ Downtown Cable charges 60 dollars for installation and 35 dollars per month. Again, we don't know how many months we're working with, but we know they will be the same, so we will have: $60 + 35x$ And, again, because we are finding the amount of months when the cost is the "same," we must set our rates equal. $120 + 25x = 60 + 35x$ From here, we can solve for $x$, since it is a single variable equation. [Note: the final answer is G, 6 months] Learning the language of ACT word problems will help you to unravel much of the mystery of these types of questions. Typical ACT Word Problems ACT word problems can be grouped into two major categories: word problems where you must simply set up an equation and word problems in which you must solve for a specific piece of information. Word Problem Type 1: Setting Up an Equation This is the less common type of word problem on the test, but youââ¬â¢ll generally see it at least once or twice. You'll also usually see this type of word problem first. For this type of question, you must use the given information toset up the equation, even though you donââ¬â¢t need to solve for the missing variable. Almost always, youââ¬â¢ll see this type of question in the first ten questions on the test, meaning that the ACT test-makers consider them fairly ââ¬Å"easy.â⬠This is due to the fact that you only have to provide the set-up and not the execution. We consider a ââ¬Å"profitâ⬠to be any money that is gained, so we must always subtract our costs from our earnings. We know that Jones had to invest 10 million starting capital, so he is only making a profit if he has earned more than 10 million dollars. This means we can eliminate answer choices C, D, and E, as they do not account for this 10 million. Now each boat costs Jones 7,000 dollars to make and he sells them for 20,000. This means that he earns a profit of: $20,000 - 7,000$ $13,000$ per boat. If $x$ represents our number of boats, then our final equation will be: $13,000x - 10,000,000$ Our final answer is A, $13,000x - 10,000,000$ Word Problem Type 2:Solving for Your Information Other than the few set-up word questions youââ¬â¢ll see, the rest of your ACT word problem questions will fall into this category. For these questions, you must both set up your equation and solve for a specific piece of information. Most (though not all) word problem questions of this type will be scenarios or stories covering all sorts of ACT math topics, including averages, single variable equations, and probabilities, among others. You almost always must have a solid understanding of the math topic in question in order to solve the word problem on the topic. This question is a rare example of a time in which not every piece of given information is needed to solve the problem. For most ACT word questions, all your given information will come into play at some point, but this is not the case here (though you can use all of your information, should you so choose). For example, we are told that 25% of a given set of jelly beans are red. 25% translates to $1/4$ because 25% is the same as $25/100$ (or $1/4$). If we are being asked to find how many jelly beans are NOT red, then we know it would be $3/4$ because 100% is the same as 1, and 1 - $1/4$ = $3/4$. So we didnââ¬â¢t need to know that there were 400 jellybeans to know that our final answer is H, $3/4$. Alternatively, we could use all of our given information and find 25% of 400 in order to find the remaining jelly beans. $400 * {1/4}$ or $400/4$ $100$ If 100 jellybeans are red, then 400 - 100 = 300 jelly beans are NOT red. This means that the not-red jelly beans make up, $300/400$ $3/4$ of the total number of jelly beans. Again, our final answer is H, $3/4$ You might also be given a geometry problem as a word problem, which may or may not be set up with a scenario as well. Geometry questions will be presented as word problems typically because the test-makers felt the problem would be too easy to solve had you been given a diagram. The test-makers didnââ¬â¢t give us a diagram, so let's makeourselves one and fill it in with what we know so far. We know from our studies of parallelogramsthat opposite side pairs will be equal, so we know that the opposite side of our given will also be 12. Now we can use this information to subtract from our total perimeter. $72 - 12 - 12$ $48$ Again, opposite sides will be equal and we know that the sum of the two remaining sides will be 48. This means that each remaining side will be: $48/2$ $24$ Now we have four sides in the pairings of 12 and 24. Our final answer is C, 12, 12, 24, 24. Now, how do we put our knowledge to its best effect? Let's take a look. ACT Math Strategies for Your Word Problems Though youââ¬â¢ll see word problems on amyriad of different types of ACT math topics, there are still a few techniques you can apply to solve your word problems as a whole. #1: Draw It Out Whether your problem is a geometry problem or an algebra problem, sometimes making a quick sketch of the scene can help you understand what, exactly, you're working with. For instance, let's look at how a picture can help you solve a ratio/division problem: Let's start by first drawing our sandwich and Jerome's portion of it. Now let's divvy off Kevin's portion and, by the remainder, Seth's as well. By seeing the problem visually, we can see that the ratio of Jerome's share, to Kevin's, to Seth'swill go in descending order of size. This let's us eliminate answer choices A, B, and C, and leaves us with answer choices D and E. Just by drawing it out and using process of elimination, and without knowing anything else about ratios, we have a 50-50 shot of guessing the right answer. And, again, without knowing anything else about fractions or ratios, we can make an educated guess between the two options. Since Jerome's share doesn't look twice as large as Kevin's, our answer is probably not E. This leaves us with our final answer D, 3:2:1. [Note: for a breakdown on how to solve this problem using fractions and ratios instead of using a diagram and educated guessing, check out our guide to ACT fractions and ratios.] As for geometry problems, remember- youââ¬â¢re often given a word problem as a word problem because it would be too simple to solve had you had a diagram to work with from the get-go. So take back the advantage and draw the picture yourself. Even a quick and dirty sketch can help you visualize the problem much easier than you can in your head and help keep all your information clear. #2:Memorize ImportantTerms If youââ¬â¢re not used to translating English words into mathematical equations, then ACT word problems cansound like so much nonsense and leave you floundering to set up the proper equation. Look to the chart and learn how to translate your keywords into their math equivalents. Doing sowill help you to understand exactly what the problem is asking you to find. There are free ACT math questions available online, so memorize your terms and then practice on real ACT word problems to make sure youââ¬â¢ve got your definitions down and can apply them to real problems. #3: Underline and Write Out theKey Information The key to solving a word problem is bringing together all the relevant pieces of given information and putting them in the right places. Make sure you write out all your givens on the diagram youââ¬â¢ve drawn (if the problem calls for a diagram) and that all your moving pieces are in order. One of the best ways to keep all your pieces straight is to underline them in the problem and then write them out yourself before you set up your equation, so take a moment to perform this step. #4: Pay Close Attention to ExactlyWhat Is Being Asked of You Little is more frustrating than solving for the wrong variable or writing in your given values in the wrong places. And yet this is entirely too easy to do when working with word problems. Make sure you pay strict attention to exactly what youââ¬â¢re meant to be solving for and exactly what pieces of information go where. Are you looking for the area or the perimeter? The value of $x$ or $x + y$? Better to make sure before you start what youââ¬â¢re supposed to find than realize two minutes down the line that you have to solve the problem all over again. #5: Brush Up on Any Specific Math Topic in Which You Feel Weak You are likely to see both diagram/equation problems and word problems for any given ACT math topic on the test. Many of the topics can swing either way, which is why there are so many different types of word problems and why youââ¬â¢ll need to know the ins and outs of any particular math topic in order to solve its corresponding word problem. For example, if you donââ¬â¢t know how to properly set up a system of equations problem, you will have a difficult time of it when presented with a word problem on the topic. So understand that solving a word problem is a two-step process: it requires you to both understand how word problems themselves work and to understand the math topic in question. If you have any areas of mathematical weakness, now is a good time to brush up on them, or else the word problem might be trickier than you were expecting. All set? Time to shine! Test Your Knowledge Now to put your word problem know-how to the test with real ACT mathproblems. 1) 2) 3) 4) Answers: K, C, A, E Answer Explanations: 1) First, let us make a sketch of what we have, just so we can keep our measurements straight. We know we have two triangles, one smaller than the other, and the hypotenuse of the smaller triangle is 5. Now our triangles are in a ratio of 2:5, so if the hypotenuse of the smaller triangle is 5, we can find the hypotenuse of the larger triangle by setting them up in a proportion. $2/5 = 5/x$ $2x = 25$ $x = 12.5$ Our final answer is K, 12.5. 2) Because we are dealing with a hypothetical number that is increasing and decreasing based on percentage, we can solve this problem in one of two waysby using algebra or by plugging in our own numbers. Solving Method 1: Algebra If we assign our hypothetical number as $x$, we can say that $x$ is increased by 25% by saying: $x + 0.25x$ Which gives us: $1.25x$ Now, we can decrease this value by 20% by saying: $1.25x - (1.25x * 0.2)$ $1.25x - 0.25x$ This leaves us with: $1x$ or 100% of our original number. Our final answer is C, 100%. Solving Method 2:Plugging in Numbers Alternatively, we can use the same basic process, but make it a little simpler by using numbers instead of variables. Let's say our original number is 100. (Why 100? Why not! Our number can literally be anything and 100 is an easy number to work with.) So if we need to increase 100 by 25%, we first need to find 25% of 100 and then add that to 100. $100 + (0.25)100$ $100 + 25$ $125$ Now we need to decrease this value by 20%, so we would say: $125 - (0.2)125$ $125 - 25$ $100$ We are left with the same number we started with, which means we are left with 100% of the number we started with. Again, our final answer is C, 100%. 3) Let's first begin by drawing a picture of our scene. We know that one vertex of the square is at (3, 0), so we can mark it on a coordinate plane. Now, we are told that each side of the square is 3 cm long. To make life simple, we can start by marking all the possible vertexes attached to our known vertex at (3, 0) straight up, down, and side to side. If no answers match, we can then look to vertexes at different angles. Our possible vertexes are: (0, 0), (6, 0), 3, 3) and (3, -3) One of our possible vertexes is at (6, 0 and this matches one of our answer choices, so we can stop here. Our final answer is A, (6, 0). 4) We are told that Ms. Lopez throws out the lowest test score and then averages the remaining scores. Because Victor's scores are already in ascending order, we can throw out the first score of 62. Now to find the average of the remaining 4 scores, let us add them together and then divide by the number of scores. $(78 + 83 + 84 + 93)/4$ $338/4$ $84.5$ Our final answer is E, 84.5. A round of applause to your success!Picture: John Morris/Flickr The Take-Aways Word problems comprise a significant portion of the ACT, so itââ¬â¢s a good idea to understand how they work and how to translate the words into a proper equation. But remember that translating your word problems is still only half the battle. You must also supplement this knowledge of how to solve word problems with a solid understanding of the math topic in question. For example, it wonââ¬â¢t do a lot of good if you can translate a probability word problem if you donââ¬â¢t understand exactly how probabilities work. So be sure to not only learn how to approach your word problems, but also hone your focus on any math topicsyou feel you need to improve upon. As has been said by author Daniel Kuhn, the premature stages of Alzheimerââ¬â¢s are the worst times for relations and friends as they frequently have no idea about the disease or how they can help out the patient. For their help, this book is what they need (Lyons, p.1 and For Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimers Disease, p.1). The book under consideration consists of three sections. First of all it tells about the causes and symptoms of the diseases. Then it moves on to how people can help their loved ones who have the disease and then it tells us about how families and caregivers can help out the patient as well as take care of themselves. Summary Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease is a very common brain disorder and has been referred as dementia a lot of times (Hoyle, p.1). This latest edition of the book encloses modernized information on threat factors, healing, and probable means of deterrence. A new chapter has been included in the book by the name of, ââ¬Å"Voices of Experience,â⬠that is full of recalls by members of the family of people with Alzheimerââ¬â¢s family members who have subsisted all the way through the occurrence of Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease, with thoughts about what worked and what had negative effects in their management of their family member suffering from the disease. What is more is that the book contains information related to two innovative drugs accepted ever since 1999 and the pronouncement by the federal government to swathe the expenditure of therapy and additional services related to health and medicines by Medicare (Alzheimers Early Stages, p.1). With improved consciousness of the warning signs of Alzheimers and enhanced techniques for diagnosis, a vast number of people have started to realize that someone in their family or friends has a memory disorder. But even with such proceedings, not many books have been written on the topic so as to assist families comprehend and deal with the early stages of the disease. The author of the book, Kuhn, a social worker and schooling director at Chicagos Rush Alzheimers Disease Center has presented this book so as to direct families in budding a viewpoint of concern, putting forward apparent, existing information on the temperament of the infirmity in conjunction with stories taken from his personal practice and first-person caregiver narratives. In the words of the author, ââ¬Å"although there are dozens of causes of dementia, AD is by far the leading one. AD destroysà cells in the part of the brain that control memory as well as other key functions such as reasoning and language, and when nerve cells in the brain die, they are not replacedâ⬠(Kuhn, p. 14). All the way through the book, Kuhn strains the significance of giving out the concern by linking others. Especially valuable is the extensive resource list of web sites, organizations, and references to consumer and professional literature (The Alzheimers Disease, p.1). The author tells us that people with Alzheimerââ¬â¢s do not have the ability to remain independent and he believes that essential physical needs like provisions and protection as well as the mental and societal needs should be considered (Alzheimers: Stepping Into The Leadership Role, p.1 and Community Care Options, p.1). à He tells us that the most significant symptom is progressive and unceasing memory loss. In an efficiently edited and full of information book, a skilled psychological health practitioner has focused on the early on stages of this distressing sickness (Recommended Reading, p.1). He elucidates the differentiation among Alzheimers symptoms and mutilations that take place because of usual aging or supplementary brain disorders. His clarifications of the therapeutic and physiological grounds for Alzheimers symptoms are very easy to get to. Devoid of being overdramatic he sounds perceptive to how families go through this type of trouncing. Conclusion In the light of the above discussion we can hereby culminate that the book Alzheimers Early Stages. First Steps for Families, Friends and Care-Givers, Second Edition by Daniel Kuhn, MSW presents in depth information about Alzheimers disease and covers many aspects related to it. The basic elements of this form of murder are ââ¬Å"willfulness, deliberation, and premeditationâ⬠. The ââ¬Å"1st-degree murderâ⬠in some states of the US is considered as applicable for ââ¬Ëfelony murder ruleââ¬â¢. This implies that if any accidental death occurs due to the reason of some violent felonies, such as burglary, abuse, kidnapping,à and robbery, it is also regarded as 1st-degree murder. With reference to the provided case, Kim is convicted of the murder, which was accidental in nature. However, the alleged surrendered herself to the police after she identified and realized the death of Michael Thomas (Thomson Routers, 2014). Contextually, defenses are sub-categorized into two forms ââ¬â¢ first, the defendant should have submitted justification that he/she had not committed the crime of murder intentionally and second, is he/she should have condemned the crime. To justify their actions regarding the suspect of murder, victims usually use the subsection laws of self-defense and defense to other individuals (Thomson Routers, 2014). As per the US state of law, ââ¬Ë1st-degree murderââ¬â¢ is a severe offense, which can result in unforgiving punishment. The degree of punishment may, however, vary in different states due to rudiments of crime and ways of defense. The degree of sentences to condemned murderer also depends upon the state law, decision of the court and strict legal rules who determines the concerned facts about the case. Again, the punishment of the victims of the 1st-degree murder may also vary as per the evidence and justification provided on the basis of sub law of self-defense and defense to others (2Thomson Routers, 2014). As per the case statement, Kim Johnson was charged with ââ¬Ë1st degree murderââ¬â¢ for the killing of Michael Thomas. She claimed for self-defense and defense to others as well. She argued with justification that as per the law of self-defense, Michael Thomas would have entered the premises by seeking her permission. Accounting information facilitates this comparison. The following paper is a collection of theoretical knowledge on accounting information and decision-making for the readerââ¬â¢s basic insight, its definition, and history. The paper will further discuss and analyze the gathered literature in detail and develop a personal conclusion on the relationship between accounting information and decision-making. The earliest possible application of organized recordkeeping in human history goes back thousands of years to early Mesopotamia, which is Iraq today. Archeologists and historians found shelved records of supplied farm produce. Using accounting to keep a record of many dealings enabled improved trade amongst persons and assisted the advancement of more complicated communities. After Mesopotamia, Luca Pacioli possibly pioneered the earliest official literary work of accounting with arithmetic concepts in 1494. Pacioli, a monk and mathematician from Italy defined the double entry system by shedding light on the logic of bookkeeping. Pacioli theorized that one has to record all items twice but variedly, i.e. double entry. Double entry means that when one credits one item, he or she debits the corresponding one, or debits the recipient and credits the giver. During Pacioliââ¬â¢s era, record-keepers made entries to show statements for the enterprise instead of the owner, making annual preparation wanting. After Pacioli, a Dutchman supported the profit and loss books at annual breaks. The degree of societal and technological progress assisted the advancement of contemporary techniques of accounting. The Industrial Revolution brought about the need for sophisticated accounting techniques. More explicitly, they have had a fascination with straightening their hair. The need to be accepted by the majority class has caused them to do so. Though the image of straight hair as being better than coarse hair still hasnââ¬â¢t left the Black community, there has been a surge of non straight hairstyles since the nineteen sixties. Wearing more natural hairstyles, which ironically enough include ââ¬Ëweavesââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëhair extensionsââ¬â¢ has been considered to be more empowered and more enlightened. However, this image comes with a price, and though it appears the ââ¬Ënaturalââ¬â¢ hairstyle movement has advanced Black women, it has actually set them back. The color of the ad is done in browns, earth tones. The signifier in this ad is the colorless sketch drawing of a woman that takes up one page of the two-page ad. She is a symbolic, versus an iconic sign, because the images that lead people to assume the picture is of a Black woman are learned, symbols such as ââ¬Ëthick lipsââ¬â¢ and the way her hair looks, not straight lines, but dotted. The signified is a Black woman, with ââ¬Ënatural hairââ¬â¢, presumably pretty. The next part of the ad, and as equally important as the first, is on the second page. Large, in bold, is the word ââ¬Ënaturallyââ¬â¢. Beneath it are the words ââ¬Å"If citrus sheen fell on shimmering braids and soothing mist caressed short twists. How lovely would that be?â⬠It has the feel of a poem, and the different shades of brown add to the artistic feel of the page. The artistic feel is important, because it adds the idea of a woman with natural hair as being both bohemian and sophisticated. Beneath the ââ¬Ëpoemââ¬â¢ is an introduction to the product. It emphasizes the productââ¬â¢s natural ingredients, things that seem as though they would be better in a salad dressing than on oneââ¬â¢s hair. However, these ingredients are important. First, the emphasis the ââ¬Ënaturalnessââ¬â¢ of the product in turn emphasizes the natural state of the projected audienceââ¬â¢s hair. Secondly, its use of Americanized products instead of typical African products (olive oil versus jojoba oil) separate this ad from the typical ââ¬Ënatural hair care productââ¬â¢ ads. This ad is geared towards a new type of Black woman, one who is more interested in a connection to spirituality and art than to Africa. The actual... ...ce political and socially, the harsher the beauty myth is used against them. In this case, the punishment for rebelling against the majority culture by adapting a ââ¬Ësubversiveââ¬â¢ hairstyle, the thinner you have to be in order to still be considered beautiful. Furthermore, thinness in the Black community is difficult to achieve. Typically, Black body structure, food and eating culture doesnââ¬â¢t easily result in thinness. This is the price Black women pay for this new expression of self. The new face of Black feminine beauty comes with a price. It alienates nearly half of those in the culture that donââ¬â¢t fit the standard. While the hairstyle challenges the majority culture, the newfound search for thinness that comes with the hairstyles returns Black women to the confines of White beauty standards. The ideology that natural hairstyles bring enlightenment came from the Rastafarian tradition. However, what new ads and cultural myth discount is the religious dimension that the Rastafarians placed on their hair. Natural hair doesnââ¬â¢t mean immediate spiritual or intellectual wisdom. What at first seems to be the advancement of Black women, shows the backwards regression of Black beauty. Dee, Maggieââ¬â¢s sister, usually could take what she wished from her motherââ¬â¢s home such as the churn top from a butter churn her family had for years. Meanwhile Maggie usually assumed it was the way life went and that other people were more deserving of the things they wished for than she was. When Dee asked her mother for two quilts their grandmother had handmade, her mother told her no and that the quilts were promised to Maggie. In this case Maggie finally gained something she wished for and was shown she deserved it too. Part of Maggieââ¬â¢s belief that she didnââ¬â¢t deserve the things she wanted sprung from her sisterââ¬â¢s ability to get everything she asked for. Dee, as it would seem always received everything she asked for when she asked for it. When Dee was graduating from high school she requested a yellow organdy dress to wear on the evening of her graduation which her mother purchased fro her. This showed Maggie that Dee received many things she wanted, while she remained with the little she already had, never asking for much. When Dee asked her mother for the hand carved churn top their relatives had made her mother gave it too her with no problems, even though it was an important piece from their family. This gave Maggie another example of how her sister got things she would have liked to keep. Maggie often felt that she didnââ¬â¢t deserve as many good things as her sister got. Maggie was often stuck with lesser than that of what her sister received and believed that was how life worked for her. As a child Maggie was badly burned in a house fire while her sister escaped just fine, this resulted in her feeling insignificant and shuffling everywhere she went trying to hide her face. The fire having burned and scarred her made her believe she deserved the lower hand of all things in life. Maggieââ¬â¢s school was closed when she was young while Dee went on through full education, this made Maggie feel simple and uneducated. The advantage of her sisterââ¬â¢s education made Maggie feel lesser and undeserving. Before the events in the story Maggie felt more like an outcast and unimportant. When Maggieââ¬â¢s mother gave the quilts to Maggie instead of Dee it shocked Maggie and helped her change her perspective on how she should be treated. Dee who always got what she wanted begged and begged for the quilts and expected to receive them. Maggie also expected so and believed her sister was more deserving of the quilts than she was, she told her mother to give the quilts to Dee. Maggieââ¬â¢s mother instead gave the quilts to Maggie shocking everyone and giving Maggie something she deserved for once. In the end Maggie was shown she deserved just as much as everyone else and that life didnââ¬â¢t always give certain people what they wanted. From marriage, sexuality, reproduction, and motherhood a woman was expected to follow a pre destined order and timeline in life to complete these tasks. The expectation of women at the time was to marry young, 18-24, and quickly start a family where she would devote her life to raising children and housekeeping. Wives of the time period shouldered the responsibilities of child care and home making, while men were expected to merely work, come home to a clean house and dinner, and then slip off to bed. Until the late-1960ââ¬â¢s when women began pushing for social change to rid themselves from the slavery of traditional womanhood. Though this life style seems more like imprisonment, some women didnââ¬â¢t feel that way, for example my grandmother Armalene Haxby, was content in her role as the home maker. However we know that this idea wasnââ¬â¢t shared with the r est of American women. The 1960ââ¬â¢s was filled with social reforms and women rights protest meant to free the American women to be equal to their male counter parts. An excerpt from Betty Friedan s book The Feminine Mystique, gave insight to some womenââ¬â¢s outlook on life, I m desperate. I begin to feel I have no personality. The main idea of the American Dream is pretty much making it big and being successful in life, having everything you need, wealth, prosperity, love and happiness. Jay Gatsby portrays the American Dream in some senses but not to its full potential. We will write a custom essay sample on Great Gatsby and the American Dream or any similar topic only for you Order Now Throughout the novel The Great Gatsby the American Dream isnââ¬â¢t shown in its positive light but, more of the opposite of that: more of the downfall or failure of it. Everyone wanted to be living the American Dream ââ¬â the pursuit of happiness in life. In the 1920ââ¬â¢s instead of going for things that brought happiness everyone seemed to revolve around money, wealth, and power. Instead of finding happiness with what they had they were all trying to attain money and power and believed this would lead to happiness. If they had all that already they took it all for granted and didnââ¬â¢t see everything that they had right there in front of them. Although it may have seemed someone had it all on the outside, once you really knew the person you could see that they werenââ¬â¢t living the best life and werenââ¬â¢t that much better than anyone else. The American Dream took a lot to actually achieve and no one really lived the actual dream because of many reasons but they were living some aspects of it. The three main characters fail to pursue the American Dream to its entirety ââ¬â for Gatsby he tried to be something he wasnââ¬â¢t only so he could get Daisy and love, without this he was nothing; for Daisy it was because of greed she lived for money and social status which got in the way of her happiness and being with who she really loved; and for Tom his money gets in the way of morals and he took everything he had in front of him for granted. Jay Gatsby went from nothing to something to try to win over Daisy. His American Dream wasnââ¬â¢t about having material things, although it involved having to get them, instead it was trying to get the love of Daisy. Earlier in his life when he first fell in love with Daisy he was a poor man and Daisy didnââ¬â¢t want that at all. Due to Gatsbyââ¬â¢s low social standing she wouldnââ¬â¢t be with him. Gatsby wanted a better life and he thought he could do it if he put his mind to it, which is also a part of the American Dream. Eventually he got money and became rich but he did this through illegal methods. This is the complete opposite of what the American Dream is because itââ¬â¢s supposed to be achieved through good virtue and hard work. He threw extravagant parties only to try and get close to Daisy, hoping that she would show up to them, but he himself never actually attended his parties. He wasnââ¬â¢t living a very great life as it seemed to everyone else, it was all a lie. The only thing that gave his life meaning was Daisy and that was the one thing he couldnââ¬â¢t have. She only came back to Gatsby after Gatsby attained his millions and was part of the high social class, but his life still wasnââ¬â¢t very stable. This shows that she let wealth get in the way of her love. Daisy loved Gatsby but because of the fact that there was really no stability in his life she didnââ¬â¢t feel comfortable with it and wouldnââ¬â¢t leave Tom for him. She was after the money and because Tom was settled down she decided to stay with him where it was safe. Greed and the fact that money took priority over everything with her was what held her back from happiness and living the American Dream. Tom was cheating on Daisy but she still stayed with him regardless just because she was comfortable with that lifestyle of being in the upper class and being seen as wealthy. Tom was a rich, handsome, successful man with a wife and family, and everything going for him, but instead of being happy with what he had he went and ruined othersââ¬â¢ lives. He cheated on Daisy with Myrtle who was married to Wilson and destroyed their marriage. His money got in the way of his morals, family, and living the American Dream. Tom and Daisy somewhat represent the American Dream through their wealth and prosperity this was only a part of the dream not the whole picture because they still werenââ¬â¢t happy they just possessed the material items. The American Dream is contradicted, everyone wanted it but no one lived it for what it was supposed to be. Gatsby in the end sees himself as a failure when Daisy chooses Tom instead of him. The failure of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s hoped for life relates to the failure of the American Dream. Without his dream Gatsby has nothing ââ¬â nothing to keep him going, no direction, and no purpose to live. He was unsatisfied with life and in the end, Wilson had killed him. This shows that Jay Gatsbyââ¬â¢s American Dream didnââ¬â¢t go anywhere and wasnââ¬â¢t satisfied to its full extent although he attempted to succeed he failed. The extent of the novel The Great Gatsby representing the American Dream is more of showing that the American Dream isnââ¬â¢t always achieved and doesnââ¬â¢t always work out the way you want it to or think it should. The American Dream is hard to achieve and it seems as if itââ¬â¢s impossible for anyone to actually achieve every aspect of it, so it is just what it is, a dream. Answer: Relationship Between the Investment Growth and Firms Usage of Derivatives The use of derivatives is primarily directed to achieve risk reduction. There are different strategies that can be formed using various derivative products such as forward contract, Futures, Options, and Swaps (Lynch, 2011). The primary objective of these strategies is to reduce the financial risk that may arise due to change in interest rates, inflation, foreign exchange rates, and the capital market indices. The investment growth is coherently related to the risk of investment (Titman, Wei, and Xie, 2004). The risk of investment is the possibility of incurring losses on the proposed investments. Thus, as the probability of incurring losses on the proposed investments goes high, the risk of investment mounts up and the growth of investment is affected adversely. Conversely, when the risk of investment is low, the firms believe in increasing the amount of investment and the growth of investment is enhanced (Titman, Wei, and Xie, 2004). Thus, there exists a strong adverse relationship between the investment growth and the risk of investment. Further, the risk of investment could be correlated to the use of derivatives of a firm. The derivatives are used to reduce the risk, thus, with the use of derivatives the risk of investment goes down which increases the growth of investments. Therefore, it could be inferred that a firm with usages of derivatives will achieve high growth in investment in comparison to the one which does not use derivatives (Sajjad, Noreen, and Zaman, 2013). A research was conducted by Shaari (2013), to explore the impact of use of derivatives on the investment growth. For this purposes, two factors such as capital expenditure and dividend payout ratio were taken as the representatives of investment growth. The empirical evidences show that there exists a positive relationship between the capital expenditure and use of derivatives (Shaari, et al., 2013). This implies that the firms using derivatives get the coverage against risk and that gives them the confidence to diversify and expand by increasing the amount of capital expenditure. For example, a firm considering expanding its operations in other countries gets exposed to the risk of foreign exchange (Shaari, et al., 2013). In order to cover this risk of foreign exchange, the firm can do currency hedging using derivatives such as future contract, forward contract, and option contracts. Now, since the risk of foreign exchange is covered, the firm can go for expansion beyond local boundaries with confidence (Shaari, et al., 2013). Further, it has been observed that the analysts have now started considering derivatives in investment appraisals. The real option in capital budgeting is the prominent example. Real option in capital budgeting can be used to cover the risk of failure of the investment project. The founder of business can enter into a contract to sell the business for a specified value at some pre-fixed date (Jacque, 2014). Thus, it reduces the risk of failure of business by covering the sales consideration. In this regard, it should be noted that if the risk of failure of business is adequately covered the investors will be willing to enhance their investment and an automatic rise in the investment growth could be observed (Jacque, 2014). Relationship Between Managerial Ownership and Firms Usage of Derivatives In the context of decision making, the managerial ownership refers to the mix of insiders and outsiders who take active part in taking strategic decisions for the firm. The insiders in this context refer to the people of management such as managing director, chief financial officer, and chief executive officer while the outsiders refer to the equity owners (Shaari, et al., 2013). The structure and size of the management within the firm does have great bearing on the strategic decision making of the firm. Further, the size of management of the firm is also linked with the scale of operations of the firm. The larger the scale of operations of the firm, wider will be the size of management. It could be observed that a small firm is managed by the owner himself while the large corporations have dedicated teams for specified jobs (Shaari, et al., 2013). In order to understand the relationship between the managerial ownership and the use of derivatives, it is important to re-emphasize the need of use of derivates. The firms use derivatives to hedge against the price fluctuations. These price fluctuations could be related to stock prices, commodity prices, currency rates, or interest rates. Now, three different variables could be used to assess the relationship between the managerial ownership and the firms usages of derivative (Adkins, Carter, Simpson, 2006). These three different variables are ownership by insiders, ownership by institutional block holders, and CEO compensation. In regard to the ownership by insiders, the findings of the research reveal that larger the ownership is with the insiders; lesser will be the possibility to use derivatives for hedging the risk (Adkins, Carter, Simpson, 2006). This happened because when the insiders own large part of equity of the firm, they would want to increase value of their holding. The value of their holdings could be increased with the increased volatility or risk, thus, they may take decision to not to opt for hedging (Adkins, Carter, Simpson, 2006). Further, in regard to the second variable that is ownership by institutional block holders, it was observed that as the ownership on the institutional shareholders increases, the firms use of derivatives for hedging also increases. This happens because the institutional investors are considered risk-averse investors and they do not want to keep their exposure open. Further, the institutional investors also does not take part in the day to day management of the firm, therefore, they want to be affirmed about the bottom line performance by appropriately guarding it against any type of risk (Adkins, Carter, Simpson, 2006). The third variable that is CEO compensation is the most crucial in understanding the relationship between managerial ownership and the use of derivatives by the firm (Adkins, Carter, Simpson, 2006). This is because the chief financial offer is the upper most authority in the management and finality of the decision to hedge or not depends upon him. In this regard, it has been explored that if the CEO compensation is given to a large extent in the form of share options, the likelihood of using derivatives to hedge the risk goes down. This happens because the CEO would want to enhance value of his share options (compensation), which is possible with increased risk. Thus, in such cases, the CEO might decide not opt for derivatives and hedge the risk (Adkins, Carter, Simpson, 2006). Relationship Between Liquidity and Firms Usage of Derivatives The liquidity refers to the firms ability to pay off short term debt as and when it falls due for payment. The liquidity of a firm is indicated by the current and quick ratio (Shaari, et al., 2013). The current ratio which is computed by dividing the current assets by the current liabilities is considered to be the prominent indicator liquidity. The use of derivatives in respect to the items of current assets and current liabilities is essential in establishing its linkage with liquidity. In respect to current assets, a firm may use derivatives to hedge the foreign currency accounts payables and bills receivables. Further, in regard to the current liabilities, the firm could use derivatives to hedge the exposure on the foreign currency accounts payables, note payables, and other short terms foreign currency loans (Shaari, et al., 2013). In order to find out the relationship between liquidity and the use of derivatives, current ratio has been considered as proxy (Shaari, et al., 2013). The result of empirical research conducted in this area depicts that there exists an adverse relationship between current ratio and the usages of derivatives. This implies that when the current ratio goes up, the firms usage of derivatives in hedging the risk goes down and vises a versa. Thus, it could be inferred that an adverse relationship exists between liquidity and the usages of derivatives by the firm (Shaari, et al., 2013). It has been observed that the firms with high current ratio (adequate liquidity), face little risk and thus, the need to reduce the risk further using derivatives remains less. The adequacy of funds to meet out the short term debt makes the firm independent and reduces the financial risk to a great extent. This appears to be the most probable reason for adverse relationship between the usages of firms derivatives and liquidity (Shaari, et al., 2013). Relationship Between Profitability and Firms Usage of Derivatives It is crucial to understand the relationship between profitability and the firms usages of the derivatives. All the firms operate with the primary objective of bringing stability in the profitability. Therefore, it is quite common to understand that all strategies and policies of the firm will be directed to stabilize the profitability, whether those strategies are risk management strategies with usages of derivatives or other strategies and plans. It is an established fact that the firms with adequate risk management outperform the others which are not able to manage the risk adequately (Chanzu and Gekara, 2014). The use of derivatives is a strategy that a firm plans for financial risk control and reduction. Thus, there would be definitely an impact of usages of derivatives on the firms profitability. However, the magnitude of the impact will depend upon the efficacy with which the firm usages the derivatives to reduce the financial risk (Chanzu and Gekara, 2014). Generally, the usages of derivatives will reduce the risk exposure and thus, the portability can be expected to stabilize (Shaari, et al., 2013). However, the use of derivatives to reduce the risk exposure could be quite costly and for that reason it may reduce the profits of the firm. The firm has to pay high premiums in the case of derivatives such as future contracts, forward contracts, and option contracts. Thus, if the strategies to hedge the risk are not planned appropriately, it may adversely affect the profitability. The commonly accepted principle that lower the risk lower will be the profitability and vice a versa, also proves to be true in the case of usage of derivatives. The use of derivatives reduces the volatility in profitability but at the same time it also increases the cost thus, bringing the profitability down (Shaari, et al., 2013). The researches have been conducted to find out the impact of use of derivatives on return on equity and return on assets. The return on equity and return on assets are considered to be adequate representatives of profitability. The return on equity measures the percentage of net profit to the shareholders equity deployed in the business while the return on assets shows overall profitability of the firm. The empirical evidences depicts that both the return on equity as well as return on assets goes down with the usages of derivatives (Shaari, et al., 2013). There has been observed a negative relationship between the use of derivatives and the return earned by the firm. These empirical evidences can also be supported by the theories of financial management also. The theories of financial management state that as the risk reduces, the return goes down (Brigham and Ehrhardt, 2007). Further, there is one more reason for reduction in the return on equity and the return on assets with the usage of derivatives. This is related to the impact of derivative contracts on the balance sheet (Ramirez, 2015). The derivative contracts increase equity or liability on one side and assets on the other side of the balance sheet. Further, the cost of derivatives such as premium reduces the net profits of the firm. Thus, the combined effect of increase in equity and reduction in net profits causes the return on equity to go down. Similarly, the increase in assets and reduced profits cause the return on assets to decrease (Ramirez, 2015). References Adkins, L.C., Carter, D.A., Simpson, W.G. 2006.
